Protecting Your Roof From April Showers

April 3, 2018

If you live in Northwest Florida, you know the saying “April showers bring May flowers”. The weather here can change dramatically in a moment’s notice this time of year, turning sunshine into storm clouds. Heavy rainfall can cause lasting damage to your roof, regardless of its age,  which is why it’s important to protect it from downpour during the Spring season.

Be on the lookout for signs of water damage, such as leakage. A sure sign that indicates your roof may be experiencing a harmful leak is if you begin seeing water stains, which can present themselves on walls, ceilings and other areas. When a home is built, the roof often harbors plumbing and roof vents, chimneys, dormers and more, making it incredible susceptible to leaks.

If you find you have a leak, mold won’t be far behind. Mold thrives on moisture, so you need to act quickly in fixing any leaks and removing any water damaged materials from your home. If you’re unsure how to go about doing that, you can always call a professional to inspect and restore your roof.

Speaking of inspections, it’s always a good idea to have a professional come and inspect your roof. A skilled roofing expert can help you identify damaged shingles, cracks, worn seals around vent pipes, and other potential red flags that may otherwise be missed.

Finally, make sure your gutter system is in tip-top shape and your roof is easily able to drain water away from it. Water build up and flooding can spell trouble for your roof, and lead to bigger problems for your home internally. Be in tune with the condition of your roof and make sure it’s prepared to handle the season’s rainy weather.
