Having well running gutters in place can be critical when it comes to preserving the condition of your roof. Here are three easy steps we recommend for cleaning out your home’s gutters:
1. Start Scooping!
The first thing you want to start doing is scooping out the debris from your gutters. Find a sturdy ladder that gets you high enough to safely perform this task, and securely place it against your home. You should be able to reach the gutters easily and comfortably. We recommend beginning the debris scooping at the end of the gutter that’s closest to the draining outlet, gradually working your way to the opposite end, removing loose debris as you go.
2. Water Pressure
For the second step, use a hose to spray a steady, high pressure stream of water through the gutters. Directing the water in a sweeping motion towards the drain outlet will help clear any remaining residue left over from the first step. By removing stubborn dirt and debris that may still be holding on to your gutters, you help reduce the risk of future debris catching and creating severe blockage.
3. Check Your Drain Pipes
For the third and final step, be sure to check on your drain pipes for any blockage. In the instance of a storm or heavy rainfall, wind and water can force materials down pipes, causing potentially severe damage. A good way to detect if your drain pipes are blocked is if you see a trickle of water rather than a flow coming from the bottom of them. If this is the case, try using a hose at the top of the gutter and spray directly into the outlet to help clear any congestion. If water is flowing freely, you shouldn’t have a problem.
