How To Tell When Your Roof Needs Replacing

January 22, 2018

Wondering when it’s the right time to replace your roof? Here are a few signs to watch for that could indicate damage from long term wear and tear.

1. Your shingles’ edges are curled, cupped or cracked. When shingles look like this, it’s a typical sign that they are in need of maintenance and repair.

2. Your roof is over twenty years old. Even if your roof was built for durability and longevity, materials can still age and break down over time. An old roof can lead to serious problems for your home, including ventilation issues and leaking.

3. You see dark streaks on your roof. Dark streaks are caused by airborne algaes that can latch themselves to shingles. While the algaes may not always be harmful to the material, it certainly doesn’t look good.

4. Moss is growing on your roof. If you see moss beginning to grow on your roof, consider replacing it. Moss typically grows in areas that don’t get much sunlight, especially in cooler, moist climates. Because it holds moisture against the roof’s surface, it can cause damage by allowing that moisture to  seep into the shingles.
